A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)
Edo/Meiji periods, (mid-late 19th century)
The rectangular box with rounded edges lacquered in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with details of okibirame, gold foil, togidashi and kimpun with a continuous landscape which begins on the cover and ends on the trays and lower interior, on the cover are a thatched hut and flowering plum, bamboo, mandarin oranges and young pines and on the underside of the lid are cherry blossoms and rafts floating down a stream, opposite are another cherry and young pines, on mura-nashiji grounds, the ground of the cover of the box roiro; fitted with a rectangular inkstone lacquered on the sides in gold and with a silver mizuire cast in the form of cherry petals on two rafts within a silver petal-rim saucer, the base of the box mura-nashiji
