Quarter-plate daguerreotype, mounted as oval, gilt-metal surround, in folding case (front cover lacking).

Lot Essay

H.M.S. Dauntless was launched at Portsmouth in June 1847. Captain Edward Halstead was master of the ship during its service at the North American Indian station.

Another daguerreotype of the same ship was sold at Christie's on March 20th, 1980, Lot 11.
