RALPH JACKSON OF ALTRINCHAM, A BICYCLE MAKER SINCE 1885, BEGAN VEHICLE MANUFACTURE WITH THE CENTURY TANDEM, A TWO SEATER TRICAR WITH 2¼ HP SINGLE CYLINDER ENGINE AND WHEEL STEERING WHICH SOLD FOR ¨115. AFTER A MOVE TO LONDON, THE COMPANY WAS TAKEN OVER BY SYDNEY BEGBIE WHO HAD EARLIER INTRODUCED ASTER ENGINES TO ENGLAND.
THIS VERY RARE 1902 EXAMPLE APPEARS TO BE IN VERY ORIGINAL CONDITION THROUGHOUT AND IS FITTED WITH ITS ORIGINAL ASTER ENGINE AND RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL "PUSH - PULL" STEERING. IT HAS A TWO SPEED GEARBOX WITH ALTERNATE CHAIN DRIVE TO THE REAR WHEEL.
IT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO THE VETERAN CAR CLUB FOR MANY YEARS AND HAS BEEN ISSUED WITH DATING CERTIFICATE NUMBER 0178. IT HAS BEEN IN THE PRESENT OWNERSHIP FOR 30 YEARS AND HAS COMPETED IN SEVERAL LONDON TO BRIGHTON VETERAN CAR RUNS.
THE OVERALL CONDITION APPEARS TO BE GOOD, BUT CAREFUL RE-COMMISSIONING PRIOR TO USE WILL BE NECESSARY FOLLOWING A LONG PERIOD OF MUSEUM DISPLAY.
