Lot Essay

This plate is dominated by the three central columns, all of which appear to depict examples of the very variable pierid Catopsilia pomona (21-47). This species is one of the most common butterflies in New Guinea. Brief rainy periods during longer dry spells can bring this insect out in huge numbers. The caterpillars feed on the legume Cassia, while the adults are fond of visiting ornamentals such as Hibiscus, to drink nectar.
