Lot Essay

This plate, which includes more specimens than any other, depicts many small or even minute species, some belonging to the so-called Microlepidoptera which, to this day, remain very poorly known. Undoubtedly there are literally hundreds of new species still to be recognised from New Guinea, and it is certain that Ellis Rowan has included species yet to be named in this remarkable plate - which sums up better than any words the idea of tropical biodiversity.
