MARIAN ELLIS ROWAN (1848-1922)

Details
MARIAN ELLIS ROWAN (1848-1922)

One hundred and sixty-six moths, in seven partly irregular columns, belonging to several families, but mostly NOCTUIDAE and GEOMETRIDAE

signed 'Ellis Rowan'; watercolour with bodycolour on grey paper
226 x 14¾in. (56 x 37.5cm.)

This plate is unusual in the departure from serried columns, with the inclusion of paired specimens that break ranks. Some of this is done to accomodate a few moths which, instead of being artifically spread in the way typical of the normal Lepidoptera collection, have their wing folded over the back of their bodies, more or less as they would rest in life, or as they died. The first column includes two examples of Plutodes (Geometridae), yellowish moths curiously marked with sub-circular maroon patches, one to each wing.

Eighty-three mostly brightly coloured medium-sized moths, in five columns. Many belong to the great family NOCTUIDAE, but there are also examples of the ARCTIIDAE (e.g. 35,36), LASIOCAMPIDAE (e.g. 1) and GEOMETRIDAE (e.g. 40,41)

the second signed 'Ellis Rowan'; watercolour with bodycolour
22.1/8 x 14in. (56.2 x 35.6cm.)two
one illustrated (the first sheet) (2)
