Lot Essay

François-Désiré Froment-Meurice (1802-1855) was the son of the goldsmith François Froment, who founded the family business in 1774. In 1839, Froment-Meurice exhibited for the first time under his own name, showing his first pieces in the Gothic taste. His work was an immediate success, and from then until his early death, his reputation grew rapidly. He was frequently referred as the Cellini of the XIX Century. His enamelled jewels in the Renaissance style had a great influence on English taste in the 1850's and 1860's.
