A BRASS MEDAL, of circular form, commemorating the foundation of the Jewish hospital in Hamburg 1841 by Salomon Heine, the obverse decorated with his portrait, titled in German, inscribed around Menschenliebe ist die Krone aller Tugenden, the reverse with a view of the hospital, titled above, inscribed below Der Sel. Frau Betty Heine zum andenken erbaut von ihrem Gatten, located and dated Hamb[urg] 1841

Salomon Heine (1766-1844) was a German banker and philanthropist. Born in Hannover, he moved to Hamburg where he opened a banking-house and established Hamburg's Jewish hospital, which could be used by gentiles only after civil rights were granted to the Jews of Hamburg in 1864. Salomon Heine was the uncle of Heinrich Heine.
