Lot Essay

Although there is no record of Mrs Casement, a drawing of a similar size and medium can be found in the India Office Library. This is in a sketchbook and is of Mrs Casement's celebrated party on 14 February 1823.
William Prinsep was part of a large family of artists who worked in India. He was the fifth son of John Prinsep, and worked for the House of Palmer and Co., a firm of bankers and merchants. Prinsep was taught by George Chinnery and painted landscapes, figures and the architecture of Calcutta
