Lot Essay

Samuel Howitt was a wealthy country gentleman who only became an artist after he encountered financial troubles. His style shows the clear influence of Thomas Rowlandson, whose sister Howitt married. Howitt's favourite subjects were drawn from country and sporting life and many of his works represent hunting scenes. Although he illustrated a book of Oriental sports, Howitt never went to the East himself
