A FRENCH EGYPTIAN REVIVAL MAHOGANY DINING ROOM SUITE
Circa 1925
Comprising a buffet, a dining-table and twelve chairs; the plinth supported buffet with sphynx monopodiae with a panelled back embellished with scarab bas-relief, the verde antico slab supported on a pair of sphynx monopodiae, and with a Horus-figure framed by demi-columns that are butressed by kneeling Isis figures and surmounted by a cobra-headed cornice of Uraei; the table slab, veneered en suite with a mosaic of verde antico, is supported on a frame that is embellished with cobra heads and whose Egyptian palm-headed columns are tied by a scarab-centred undertier; the scarab-backed chairs each with arrowhead palmettes and solid concave backs, with cream coloured upholstered seats, on lion monopodiae

Lot Essay

This dining suite, represents the revived enthusiam for Egypt following the 1920s discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. Attributed to Mercier Frères, of the rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, who opened their Palais de Marbre gallery in the Champs Elysées at this period.
