As suggested in the Gent exhibition catalogue, the present lot probably derives its composition from a lost original, of which a version was included in this exhibition (op.cit, no. 17). It can also be compared with the picture of a fishmonger in the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples (op.cit, under fig. no. 17, fig. 5)
