Painted in a muted palette with scenes of 17th Century-style equestrian figures, one group at an inn and another group resting in an extensive landscape, beneath a basket-weave border painted with scattered bouquets and above a band of spiralling leaves, the cover similarly painted with figures at an encampment and beside a stream and with a seated putto finial, mounted with a pierced rim, two mythical animal's mask handles holding rings of drapery, a stem pierced with lozenges, cast with a laurel-garland and on a shaped square base
