Lot Essay

This may be compared to a drawing by Asselijn in the Historisch Museum, Amsterdam (Anne-Charlotte Steland, Die Zeichnungen des Jan Asselijn, Fridingen, 1989, no. 3, pl. 70) from the Ploos van Amstel Collection that may have served as a preliminary study for a picture on the English art market in 1985 (op.cit., pl. 71). Another picture by Jan Asselijn with the same viewpoint but with different staffage was sold at Sotheby's, London, 4 July 1990, lot 51.
There is a Jan Both etching of the bridge (Bartsch 5)
