Lot Essay

A similar view attributed to the artist's father Johannes Schouten (1716-1792) from the Leonhardt Collection was sold in these Rooms, 20 November 1989, lot 194. In 1755 the 17th Century Stadspaardenstal was rearranged to become the Generaal Postcomptoir and was used as such until 1854, when a new building was constructed on this site. The Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was filled in 1883-4. The houses on the right no more exist; in their place the Raadhuisstraat was constructed in 1895
