Lot Essay

A weaker replica of this drawing is at Braunschweig (inv.no. 366). A study of the same model is in the British Museum (Sumowski, op.cit., no. 26x, fig. 6). Professor Sumowski tentatively dates both drawings to circa 1640-5. As noted by F.W. Robinson in the 1977 exhibition catalogue 'This calm and beautiful drawing of a woman moving to the right, wrapped in several layers of clothing but perfectly balanced, shows this member of the Rembrandt circle at his best.' (op.cit., p. 49)
