Lot Essay

It is very unusual to find large Buddhist figures of this date cast in bronze, rather than carved in wood (and often gilt). The type is illustrated in Hai-Wai Yi-Chen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections, National Palace Museum, Taibei, Buddhist Sculpture, no.133, the large Avalokitesvara from the British Museum; and ibid., no.130, the more elaborate Guanyin figure in the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art
