Adapted from the marble group ascribed to J.A. Houdon (1741-1828), one of which was originally made for the Duc of Chârtres.
The subject derives from La Fontaine's Fables and was a popular subject for both painters and sculptures in the eighteenth century.
Since then innumerable copies are made in terra cotta, Sèvres porcelain and bronze
