The triangular panelled pediment centred by acanthus sprays and with scrolled rosette terminals supported by female herm caryatids, above reeded and stiff-leaf columns headed by stiff-leaf pilasters, the rectangular plate within a panelled moulded slip frame with associated fruiting foliate-cast handles, the bases later-mounted with water-carrying nymphs above a ring-turned foliate baluster stretcher and on scrolled acanthus-headed claw monopodiae, inscribed CJ, re-decorated, the gilding refreshed, previously with sliding candle-branches to reverse

Lot Essay

This bronzed and golden cheval glass with Grecian cippus-pediment and Etruscan-columnettes with vestal-caryatid heads and bacchic-lion feet derives from the 'antique' style promoted by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's Recueil de décorations intérieures of 1801. A pattern for a related miroir à la psyché or glace à écran with herm-caryatids was published in Pierre Antoine de la Mésangère's Collection de Meubles et Objets de Goût, 1807
