Lot Essay

The present lot may be compared to a drawing on blue paper of similar size, technique and subject inscribed in the same way, referring to the artist's nickname 'Crabbetje', due to his disfigured left hand, sold in these Rooms, 25 November 1991, lot 110 (Steland, op.cit., no. 18, pl. 116). A further drawing comparable in size and technique is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (J.Q. van Regteren Altena, Vereeuwigde Stad Rome door Nederlanders getekend 1500-1900, Amsterdam, 1964, no. 4, fig. 37)
