A 17TH CENTURY-STYLE PARCEL-GILT NAUTILUS CUP
designed by Hermann Götz for E.D. Wollenweber, Germany, late 19th Century

On a waisted circular wooden base mounted with four winged female busts terminating from openworked scrolls applied with flowers, the base of the stem applied with further scrolls, sea-horses, snails and flowers and engraved with with scrolling foliage, the centre of the stem formed as a putto resting on a spray of scrolls terminating from flower heads, his arms raised above his head to support the shell, the shell engraved with Venus and winged cherubs playing in a seascape with mountains beyond and applied to the rim and back with further winged female busts, grotesque masks, sea creatures, strapwork, hanging fruit and foliate swags - 46.5cm high

Lot Essay

Hermann Götz, painter, sculpture and lithographer was born in Donaueschingen, Germany in 1848. He later moved to Carlsruhe where he studied and in 1882 became the director of the School of Arts and Crafts of Carlsruhe. Through this possition he was responcible for exhibitions held in Chicago in 1893 and in Paris in 1900, one year before his death in 1901
