A COLLECTION OF WORKS BY GER LANGEWEG FROM THE ESTATE OF THE ARTIST The Amsterdam artist Ger Langeweg (1891-1970) was principally, besides a short stay at the Gent Academy of Arts in 1928, a self-taught man. Striking in Langewegs works is the diversity of styles. Before World War II, and after an expressionist period, he can be reckoned among the "magisch realisten" in the manner of Pyke Koch and Raoul Hynckes. This is clearly visible in the still lifes, in which he was searching for a "reality behind reality", expressed in a minute reproduction of the visible world. After 1945 a dramatic change made it's appearance in his art. The drawing became his most important medium. In a James Ensor and Jeroen Bosch-way he created fantastic worlds full of deterrent obsessions and agony, but with humoristic elements as well. Ger Langeweg has had exhibitions in among others Galerie Le Canard (Amsterdam, 1950), Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam, 1958) en museum 't Coopmanshuis (Franeker, 1987). Bas Roodnat wrote on the occasion of the last exhibition an article in the NRC-Handelsblad, in which he expressed his praise for Langeweg's work."De schilderijen en tekeningen zijn niet die van een verdienstelijk man van het tweede plan, maar van een knap en oorspronkelijk kunstenaar, behorend tot de mentaliteit waarin ook mensen als onder anderen Pyke Koch en Raoul Hynckes werkten. (NRC-Handelsblad, 1 June 1987). (See for more informations on the artist: Exh. Cat. Museum 't Coopmanshuis, Ger Langeweg (1891-1970), 9 May - 11 July 1987)
