Lot Essay

Eastlake was in Rome 1816-20 and again 1821-30. This is probably a work of c.1819-20 and can be compared to Road from Subiaco to the Convent of San Benedetto, 10½ x 15½in., repro. D. Robertson, Sir Charles Eastlake and the Victorian World, Princeton, 1987, fig. 5.
