Lot Essay

Alexander Davis Cooper was the son of Abraham Cooper, R.A. (1787-1868), the well-known painter of sporting, battle and historical subjects. Alexander specialised in landscape, portraiture, genre scenes and illustrations to Shakespeare, exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1837-88, as well as at the British Institution and Suffolk Street.
