The original, on canvas, 121.5 x 166.5 cm, is in the Rijksmuseum, on loan from the City of Amsterdam since 1885
Rembrandt was probably inspired by Raphaels' design for one of the Loggie in the Vatican - the Isaac and Rebecca spied upon by Abimelech which was engraved by Badalocchio. Rembrandt reinterpreted the composition in a drawing which relates to the Rijksmuseum painting (see E. Havercamp-Begeman, Creative Copies, 1988, no. 35, pp. 130-133)
According to an inscription on a label on the reverse, the present lot was painted by the artist in collaboration with his wife, Hendrika Wilhelmina Jacoba Schaap, née van der Spek (1867-1926), circa 1900
