Lot Essay

The artist Ermocrate Bucchi had been one out of many Italian painters who worked and exhibited in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th Century.
Bucchi was a well-known painter of fans.
In the famous novel Eline Vere by Louis Couperus one can read:
"Het heugde haar (= Eline Vere): verleden zomer op de tentoonstelling van schilderijen in de Academie, had zij waaiers van Bucchi gezien, en opgemaakt en uitgespannen achter glas, en zij herinnerde zich na plotseling ze zeer bewonderd en de wens geuit te hebben er een te bezitten."
