Lot Essay

The subject is taken from the second of ten woodblocks by Salomon Barnard for Jean de Tournes' Lyons Bible of 1554
Cf. an almost identical dish painted by the same hand, sold in these Rooms, 30 March 1987, lot 254

Italian potters were recorded in Lyon as early as 1510 and after 1550 the number grew. This dish is almost certainly the work of an Italian immigrant, see Errol Manners, Ceramics Source Book, p. 112
