Lot Essay

The figure of the maid in the present lot is taken from the picture by Gerard Dou in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna (see W. Sumowski, Gemälde der Rembrandt Schüler, I, 1983, p. 591, no. 294), whereas the niche, the vine-tendrils and the pinks in the terracotta amphora are taken from Dou's selfportrait in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris the Elder, I, 1981, fig. 98)
