Lot Essay
Dr Ludwig Meyer of the Archiv für Künstgeschichte, Munich, has kindly suggested the attribution on the basis of a photograph, in a letter of 18 September 1994. He suggests that the present lot was executed in the area of Esslingen/Heilbronn under the influence of the work of Hans Schäufelin. The dimensions of the present lot would appear to be standard for forming the wings of an an altarpiece, by adding two more of such panels on top of each other.
The remnants of a Raising of Lazarus on the reverse suggests that the panel may have been re-used following the destruction of an earlier altarpiece
