A 16TH CENTURY-STYLE SILVER-GILT AND PAINTED GLASS STANDING SALT
no apparent marks , probably France, 19th Century

Square and raised on four foliate-capped lions' paw feet, the lower rim cast with a band of acanthus leaves, the body set on each side with a lozenge-shaped plaque surrounded with engraved foliage, two plaques silver-gilt and cast in relief with a scene of the Nativity and of the Resurrection, and two plaques decorated with painted enamel showing the Annunciation and Christ and the Virgin enthroned, the upper rim supported at the corners with fluted columns and S-scrolls, the top with raised square section engraved with foliage, the cover with further engraved decoration surrounding a domed circular centre cast with strapwork and hanging fruit, and applied with four small lozenge-shaped plaquettes showing a winged figure and animals with blue surround, the finial in three tiers, the lower applied with S-scrolls, the middle in the shape of a wicker basket containing fruit, the top surmounted with the figure of an old man in tunic and holding a spear - 34cm high (1466gr)
