Lot Essay

The present figure is inspired by Apuleus's romance The Golden Ass. Its pose derives partly from Canova's 1789-92 sculpture of Psyche with the butterfly, which also bears Venus's toilet-jar or urn, and the drapery recalls the antique group of Cupid and Psyche, now in the Capitoline Museum.
