Lot Essay

Rubery Bennett in a note describes the setting of the painting as "Geographically of great interest being the lowest sunken valley in Australia through which the Wollondilly River,(showing) the Nattai and the Cox river flows. This large catchment area is supplying Sydney with most of it's water. Where this picture was painted, the water is now 50 feet above the level showing. The rivers are held by the great Warragamba Dam near Penrith."
