Lot Essay

Rein Miedema discovered his artistic talents later on in life. His original profession was plasterer, but in 1886, at the age of 50, he listed painter as his profession.
As he was born in Harlingen and settled in Rotterdam, Miedema's fascination with the maritime was fueled by his surroundings. He spent most of his time at the coast observing the ships going out to sea. Apart form his success as a painter, Miedema also considered himself a gifted poet. His poetry was dedicated to the mystery of the sea.
Miedema's painterly oeuvre expresses the artist's fascination with the whimsicality of the sea. This is especially visible in his nocturnal seascapes.
