Lot Essay

With their guilloche-carved seat-rail and scrolled acanthus arm terminals, these canapés relate to the celebrated suite of seat furniture supplied to Jean Lemâître de la Martinière (d. 1788) for the château de Marais by Claude II Sené (sold anonymously at Christie's New York, 26 October 1994, lots 99-102)
The unusual profile of the feet can also be found in Séné's oeuvre, for instance on the fauteuils sold in Paris, M. Lebart, 2 December 1994, lot 190 and at Galleria, 24 October 1968, lot103
