Emperor William I of Prussia with moustache and broad sideburns, wearing a blue uniform with silver epaulets, studded with badges and breast-stars of Orders including the Pour le Mérite and the Iron Cross; enamel, oval -- 50 mm high, gold frame engraved with the sitter's name and dates

Lot Essay

William I (1797-1888), second son of King Frederick-William III of Prussia (see lot 104), became regent for his elder brother Frederick-William IV in 1858, and King of Prussia in 1861. He was proclaimed Emperor in 1871. He had married Augusta of Saxony-Weimar in 1829.
