Lot Essay

Henri-Charles, duc de Bordeaux, was born 29 September 1820, after the death of his father, the duc de Berry who had been murdered on 14 February 1820. After the abdications of his grandfather, King Charles X, and of his uncle, the duc d'Angoulême, in 1830, he adopted the title of Henri V, or comte de Chambord. He married Maria-Theresia-Beatrice, daugther of Francis IV, Archduke of Austria-Este, in 1846. The last of the main line of the Bourbons, he died without issue in 1883, in the castle of Frohsdorf in Austria.
