Lot Essay

Sandwich (1928) was bought as a yearling at Doncaster for 3600 gns. by George Lambton acting on behalf of Lord Rosebery. In his second year he easily won the 1½ mile Chester Vase, on the strength of which he started second favourite at 8/1 in the 1931 Derby. Harry Wragg did not ride his best race and not letting Sandwich see daylight, was third to Cameronian and Orpen. In the St. Leger, he started at 9/1 and won for Lord Rosebery with the utmost ease by four lengths from Orpen; Cameronian finished last
