Lot Essay

The two adjacent knobs at the top of the head are probably the stumps of the horns which would have encircled the head previously. The elegance of this fine old mask remains, despite the loss of the horns, demonstrating a point often made by William Fagg - that a great carving can still give pleasure to the viewer, even in a damaged state.
