The commanding presence of this superb dance crest would suggest the work of a master carver working before World War II. It was probably carved for egigun (the Ekiti version of Egungun) or a related Ekiti Yoruba masquerade. The hairstyle igogo is that worn by a new bride, also used by devotees of a god at his annual festival - for instance by a priest of shango. The turtle engraved on the neck alludes to the relationship of water to land and also the trickster.
