Collation: π6 i6 a-z6 A-Z6 Qr6 6 (π1r title and woodcut of the author, π1v blank, π2r sermon summaries, π3r preface to tabula, π3v tabula, a1r text, 6v blank). 300 leaves. 56 lines and headline, double column. Type: 1:180(165)G (title, headlines and section incipits), 2:82aG (text), 4:93G (headings), some printed guide-letters. Woodcut of Bernardinus of Siena (187x126mm) by the Master of the Verardus, woodcut initial S (30x28mm); woodcut device (Weil 40), 3- to 4-line initials in red, early MS. foliation. (First quire reinforced at hinges, small wormholes in first and final quires affecting a few letters, very slight marginal dampstain in fos. 50, 53.) Modern binding of printed leaf over pastepaper boards. Provenance: title inscribed FF. Cesareensium
SECOND EDITION. The large woodcut on the title-page by the Verardus Master depicts Bernardinus with the trigrammatic "yhs", a mystical symbol to which he espoused devotion. While Bernardinus did not initiate devotion to the divine name, it was through his preaching that it became widespread. The present copy is one of only a few which have the ornamental woodcut S capital on the title-page (GW Anm.); other copies with it are in the British Library and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (copy one).
