COCLÈS, Barthelemy. Physiognomiae & Chiromantiae Compendium. Strassburg: G. Messerschmidt, 1555.
8° (154 x 95mm). Ornamental title border, woodcuts of heads and many woodcuts of palms, showing various palm lines, ornamental initials in several sizes. (Lightly browned and spotted.) 19th-century calf.
The first section of this work outlines the interpretation of personality based on physical characteristics of the head. Varieties of facial features are depicted in woodcuts, including foreheads, eyebrows, six types of noses, etc. For instance, a high, round forehead indicates a friendly, happy person of high intelligence. That is followed by a section on chiromancy by Andreas Corvus. The 70 woodcuts of palms depict the possible palm lines, which are then interpreted in the accompanying text. BLSTC German, p.215 (1141.b.5.); this edition not in Caillet, Wellcome, Dorbon-Ainé.
