CONRADUS DE BRUNDELSHEIM (fl.1303-1321). Sermones de sanctis. [Reutlingen: Michel Greyff, not after 1478].

Chancery 2° (269x190mm). Collation: [110 2-138 146 15-318] (1/1r blank, 1/1v tabula, 1/2r text, 31/8v blank). 248 leaves, fo. 5/8 placed after 5/1 and 15/6 after 15/3 in rebinding. 42-43 lines. Type: 1:93aG. 6-line initial in red with brown penwork decoration on 1/2r, other initial spaces left blank, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red on 1/2-4 and 13/3v-4r only. (Tiny hole in 29/7-8 affecting 1 letter only, small hole in blank section of first and last leaves, repaired at inner margin of 5/5,6, slight soiling on 29/3.6.) Blindstamped half calf over wooden boards, brass pin fastenings, pastedowns and flyleaves consist of 6 lvs. of a 15th-century German manuscript on paper of Determinatio under the Archbishop of Salzburg concerning the Council of Basel, the deposition of Eugenius IV as Pope and the election of Felix V as anti-Pope. Provenance: Ad Usum Monasterii S Lan[--]ti washed from first text page, occasional marginal annotations in an early hand.

Probably the second edition, preceded by the undated edition printed by Pafraet at Deventer around 1477-79. Conradus composed this work for refectory reading and chose the sermon as a convenient form to organise his thoughts and citations of authors, such as Bernard, Bonaventure, and Albertus Magnus. Through use they took on the function of a sermon aid, and became one of the most widely-disseminated collections of sermons in Germany in the late Middle Ages.
