4° (205 x 141mm). Headpieces, ornamental initials. (Very small wormholes at extreme lower margin in first few quires.) Contemporary Portuguese binding of red morocco elaborately panelled in gilt with flowers, angels' heads, acorns, and fleurons at centre, inner border of foliate and floral tools intertwining an architectural band, outer roll-tool border of hunting scene beneath trees, gilt spine with title lettered in second compartment (spine very lightly faded and with slight wear), red speckled edges; cloth clamshell box.
A fine 18th-century Portuguese binding. Two of the tools are very similar to ones on a binding in the collection of Matias Lima (A Encadernaçã em Portugal, 1933, plate XXXV): a hunting scene beneath 8 varieties of trees, including two types of palm tree, and a tassle at the corners of the panel. The present work by the Portuguese engineer, Azevedo Fortes, is a defense of his previous classic work on fortifications against an attack by Antonio do Couto de Castellobranco in Memorias Militares.
