BORGIA, Cesare (1476-1507). Letter signed ('Cesar, Borgia de Francia, Dux Valentiae'), addressed to the Priori and Gonfalonier ('Vexillifer Justicie') of Florence, dated in autograph 'in Civitate nostra Forlinii, vi Aprilis millesimo quingentesimo primo', the text of the letter in Italian, announcing that Joannis Baptista Cataneo who regularly transports timber to the city of Imola from the area beside the river Santerno, has suffered great harm from the neighbouring subjects of his correspondents, which he is certain is not their intention, and urging them to take steps to ensure that they refrain from such injurious actions, ½ page, 4to, numbered '59' in a different hand in the upper right margin, address panel on verso with 'S. R. E. Confalonerius et Capitaneus Generalis' inscribed below the address.
The letter is dated one month before the signing of the Treaty of Campi between Cesare Borgia and the Signoria of Florence. Cesare, having seized many cities in the Romagna, had finally captured Forli from the Sforza in December 1499. He made his headquaters at Imola early in 1501.
