LES BENNETT - Born and brought up in Wood Green, London, it must have seemed only natural that Les Bennett should, when the time came, join his local Senior Club, Tottenham Hotspur: but that this should occur in 1939 on the eve of War was bad luck in the extreme. By 1946 however, Bennett was demobbed, back in football harness, and making a big impression at Inside-Right. As part of the famous "push-and-run" side under the Captaincy of Ron Burgess, Bennett quickly developed as a regular goal scorer and skillful ball player. He was highest scorer for Spurs in Seasons 1948-49 and 1950-51 and on their North American Tour in 1952. Overall, he scored 104 League goals, 14 F.A. Cup goals and 170 goals in total over a fourteen year career. In 1953, Bennett transfered to West Ham.
