Lot Essay

Moreau never entered the classes of the official Academy, but those of the Académie de Saint-Luc. His first works show the influence of his master de Wailly. The largest part of his work is drawn in watercolour or bodycolour and these depict views of gardens and farmhouses around Paris. Views of farmhouses near streams similar in technique to the present drawing are reproduced in G. Wildenstein, Un peintre de paysage au XVIIIe siècle, Louis-Gabriel Moreau, Paris, 1923, nos. 49, 74, pls. 24 and 35.
