Lot Essay

By the same hand as a drawing of the same subject attributed to Savoldo in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, W.M. Griswold, Some newly discovered drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Apollo, November 1994, pp. 25-6, fig. 1. The Metropolitan sheet has the same provenance as the present drawing, Hone, and was drawn on the same type of paper. Similar physical characteristics are found in both drawings, the heads are seen da sotto da su and the ears are placed too low. Griswold points out that the morphology of the head of the Metropolitan sheet is typical of Savoldo, as is the repetition of some of the contours of the face.
