Lot Essay

Dated to the Roman period, 1524-7, by Popham who suggested that this drawing might be related to The Adoration of the Shepherds (Illustrated Bartsch, XXVIII, 4) engraved by Caraglio, after a design by Parmigianino, in 1526. Parmigianino first drew the study of the Madonna with the Christ Child held by a female attendant and then, turning the paper upside down, drew the Madonna and Child with Saint Elizabeth and the Infant Baptist below.
