Lot Essay

An inscription by the same hand to the one on the present drawing, 'Grre' is found on a number of other drawings from this series, a sheet in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, bears an inscription 'G' done in the same ink, D. Ternois, Jacques Callot, exhib. cat., Musée historique lorrain, Nancy, 1992, lot 43, illustrated. The inscription corresponds probably to a price code. This drawing, from the same group as the preceding lot, is copied from plate seven of Horses of Different Lands by Tempesta, Illustrated Bartsch, XVII, 947.
Pierre Rosenberg accepted the present drawing as autograph, however, Ternois in the 1973 article, on the basis of a photograph from the Witt Library, has expressed doubt about its authorship.
