B I L L F O U L K E S
A native of St. Helens, Bill Foulkes' footballing career began with local Whiston Boys' Club. In March 1950 aged 18, and whilst employed by the Coal Board, he signed on as an amateur with Manchester United, turning professional one year later, but initially on part-time terms. Indeed, his early successes - two appearances for the Football League - were achieved during this period. Foulkes' role at Right Full-Back with the 'Busby Babes' was tragically recast following the Munich Disaster when he was obliged to fill the Centre-Half slot, a position which, he now readily admits, he much preferred. The subsequent success of the post-Munich team under Matt Busby are legendary and, for Foulkes, inevitably culminated at the age of 37 with a European Cup Winners medal, he having scored the goal which earned the team a Final place. Bill Foulkes retired from playing with United in 1970 after twenty years service (a Club record), having won four Championship medals (a Club record for an individual), and having made over 700 Club appearances. His subsequent career in football reads like something out of a travel brochure: Coaching appointments with New York Cosmos, Chicago Sting and Tulsa Roughnecks in the late 70's; back to England and Manager of Witney Town until March 1980 before a return to America later in 1980 to coach San José Earthquakes; subsequent managerships in Norway with Stenjkoe, Lillestrom and Viking, taking the latter two to early stages of the EUFA and European Cup Winners' Cups respectively; and, most recently, coaching positions in Japan, assisting Team Mazda to a League victory and a place in the Super League. Bill Foulkes has now returned to Britian and is currently seeking a Coaching position or similar in the UK.

Manchester United became the first English Club to lift the coveted European Cup by beating Benfica 4-1, after extra-time, in the final played at Wembley. On their way to Wembley, United defeated Hibernians Valletta 4-0; Sarajevo 2-1; Gornick Zabrze 2-1; and the mighty Real Madrid 4-3 in the semi-final with Foulkes scoring the goal that took United through to the Final against Benfica.
